Yield Guild Games has expanded its ambitions with the launch of a new division: YGG Play. This branch focuses on developing casual, crypto-native games, which they describe as “Casual Degen” games. This marks an exciting new chapter in their quest to connect players with the games that are truly right for them.
The first game that YGG Play is launching is LOL Land, a browser-based board game that spotlights the beloved characters of the Pudgy Penguins community and allows players to earn token-based rewards. And the interest has been overwhelming, with over 100.000 pre-registrations for the launch, which will take place exclusively on the Abstract Chain. What a start!
After four years of observing the struggles of Web3 games, Yield Guild Games decided it was time to take a fresh look at the industry. Rather than aiming for broad mainstream adoption, the organization is targeting a niche that is often overlooked. As Gabby Dizon, co-founder of YGG, explains, “People play casual games on their phones while commuting, waiting in line, or taking a break. They do this both for fun and for rewards such as points, badges, or collectibles.”
With years of experience in the Web3 gaming space, and pioneering the “play-to-earn” movement in 2020, YGG has gained valuable insights. Dizon isn’t afraid to share his opinions on what the crypto market needs. “We know what’s fun, what works, and what doesn’t,” he says confidently.
YGG’s strategy is a clear shift: instead of just investing in Web3 games, they now want to be the driving force behind these creations themselves. Rather than targeting traditional gamers, the guild is choosing to appeal to crypto enthusiasts – those who trade memecoins, mine NFTs, and speculate on the blockchain. Dizon calls this group the “Casual Degens.” It’s a smart move in an underserved market that’s much larger than the hardcore Web3 gaming community.
LOL Land not only offers players four themed boards such as YGG City and Beach Day, but also introduces two different play modes. In the free mode, everyone can roll unlimited dice without token rewards. The premium mode, on the other hand, requires a purchase amount for dice rolls, which allows players to earn points that can be exchanged for YGG tokens. And let’s be honest: who doesn’t love the chance to win from a prize pool of as much as $10 million?
Dizon finds his inspiration in years of experience as a game developer. “Before I started working in crypto and founded YGG, I was a game developer for over 20 years,” he says. His deep knowledge of casual gaming shines through in the creation of LOL Land.
The focus on crypto enthusiasts is not without reason. Dizon believes this approach will ensure that Web3 games can have a lasting impact. “It’s hard to make games,” he says. “It gets harder with new technologies; finding the right format for users is a challenge.” But his determination and enthusiasm show that he has no intention of giving up on this exciting, yet challenging, endeavor.
“The most important thing is that we keep trying and finding new ways,” Dizon says, with a wink.
