From Sex Work to Space Exploration: Six Careers That Robots Will Soon Take Over

Reading time: 3 minutes

Robots are no longer just good at assembling cars or vacuuming floors. They’re laying tiles, patrolling neighborhoods, and even invading intimate spaces like something straight out of a science fiction movie. As automation accelerates, machines are taking over tasks once reserved for humans, from construction sites to our streets. This blurring of the lines between new and necessary challenges us to rethink what it means to work with machines, build relationships, and live together.

In June 2024, Hugging Face entered the world of humanoid robotics with Reachy 2, a $70.000 AI-driven robot developed by their subsidiary Pollen Robotics. This price point points to the growing affordability that will enable wider adoption of robots in the real world. Let’s take a look at some of the professions that will be impacted by robotics, what it means for workers, and how our society is responding to the rise of a machine-driven workforce.

The Construction World

The construction industry is undergoing a transformation as tasks such as masonry, welding and painting are automated. By deploying robots, managers can cut costs and accelerate schedules while reducing the need for human labor. The global construction robotics market is expected to reach $774,6 million by 2032. The introduction of robots into labor-intensive industries is not only a matter of efficiency, but also an answer to the growing shortage of workers willing to do physically demanding work.

By giving robots more responsibilities on construction sites, they are also expanding their reach into less traditional domains such as policing.

Police patrols

Police departments are beginning to deploy robots to patrol city streets. Autonomous machines and drones are being used to patrol public spaces, report incidents and assist with surveillance. In December, a video went viral of Chinese police patrolling Shenzhen with a spherical robot called the RT-G. Developed by Logon Technology Co., Ltd., the AI-powered device can recognize faces and alert authorities to suspicious activity. It is also equipped with tear gas dispensers and can withstand impacts of up to four tons.

The factory

Factory floors are also undergoing a revolution, with companies like Mercedes-Benz and Tesla that deploy AI-powered robots like Apptronik's Apollo and Tesla's Optimus. These robots are taking over tasks once performed by humans, from handling car parts to managing logistics. Elon Musk, the CEO Tesla, Inc., told a shareholders meeting that its Optimus robots are already performing tasks in factories. Now, there are even robots that autonomously deliver coffee or park cars in smart offices, marking a step forward in integrating robotics into our daily work.

Space exploration

Elon Musk has expressed interest in using humanoid robots for space exploration, to perform tasks that are too risky or demanding for human astronauts. Sending robots to Mars would allow them to operate in hazardous environments, collect vital data, and prepare habitats, reducing risks for future human crews. Musk has even announced plans to send Optimus robots to Mars in 2026, in preparation for future manned missions.

healthcare

With the population aging and the number of people over 65 expected to rise to 82 million by 2050, healthcare robotics is emerging to meet the growing demand for elderly care. Robots like NVIDIA’s Isaac for Healthcare are designed to assist with physical tasks in clinical settings, while other robots help seniors move safely and prevent falls.

Sex work

In one of the most challenging corners of robotics, technology is even beginning to replace humans in the sex industry. AI-powered devices like responsive sex robots are being developed by tech companies focused on automating intimacy and commercializing digital companionship. One Las Vegas developer who calls himself a “builder of sex robots” has raised more than $70.000 for his project, which aims to offer alternatives to human intimacy. It raises questions about ethics, consent, and what it means when synthetic creations are able to simulate intimacy.

It is clear that the rise of robots in our daily lives cannot be stopped. However, this raises important questions about the future of work and human interactions.
