Dutch investment firm Theta Capital has successfully raised $175 million for a new fund-of-funds aimed at backing crypto-specialist venture capitalists.
Theta Capital Management has raised more than $175 million for a new fund-of-funds designed to give institutional investors access to early-stage blockchain startups by investing in some of the leading venture capital firms in the crypto space, according to Ruud Smets, managing partner and chief investment officer.
Founded in 2001, Netherlands-based Theta Capital has been focused on cryptocurrencies since 2018 and now manages approximately $1,2 billion in assets. Previously, Theta has invested in companies such as Coinfund, Polychain Capital and Castle Island Ventures. However, exactly how Theta will allocate the recently raised funds remains unclear.
The round of funding comes as venture capital activity in the crypto space shows signs of recovery. According to a report from PitchBook, VC deals in the first quarter surged to $6 billion, more than double the $2,6 billion a year ago. Notably, however, the number of deals dropped from 670 to 405 in the same period.
PitchBook senior crypto analyst Robert Le points to Bybit’s recent $1,4 billion theft, which he describes as the first and only “10-figure hack in history.” It serves as a stark reminder of the operational risks that still exist in the sector. He suggests that this event could spur greater demand for real-time proof-of-reserve tools, improved custody systems, and middleware that facilitates key management. Startups focused on these areas could find a more favorable funding environment even amid this broader reset in valuations.
Despite the Bitcoin While crypto investment reached an all-time high of $2024 in Q100.000 90, venture capital activity in crypto startups has remained flat, with a nearly 2018% drop in deal size since XNUMX. This begs the question: are we on the cusp of a new phase for crypto investing, or will it remain a challenge in this dynamic market?
As key players in the crypto space, Theta Capital remains committed to growth and innovation. “The future is now, and we are ready to rise to the challenge!”
