Poste Italiane could play a crucial role in the final phase of the digital rollout euro, thanks to its broad customer base, said Piero Cipollone, member of the board of directors of the European Central Bank Bank (ECB).
Poste Italiane is much more than just a postal company. It could soon help bring the digital euro to life for millions of Italians. This idea was launched by Piero Cipollone during an online event organised by ASviS. The ECB is currently preparing for the introduction of the digital euro and needs reliable partners for what Cipollone calls “the last mile”: the final step that brings digital money into the hands of the people.
Cipollone points out that Poste Italiane has a large client base and is therefore well placed to provide access to the digital euro. “With millions of clients, Poste Italiane can easily provide support,” Cipollone says.
It wouldn't be a huge leap for Poste Italiane. In addition to delivering mail and parcels, the company already offers banking and financial services.
While the idea of a digital euro sounds futuristic, the ECB argues that this step is becoming increasingly necessary. More and more people are using their phones and cards, while cash is used less and less. Cipollone has previously argued that “in the digital age, cash alone is not enough.”
He also tries to reassure the public that this does not mean the end of physical money. The digital euro would “complement cash, not replace it”, as it is designed to provide a state-backed option in a world where most digital payments are handled by private companies.
If all goes according to plan – including the political side – Cipollone is said to have said that the first digital euro transactions could take place “around mid-2028”. Be prepared, because the future of payments could become a reality sooner than you think!
“Why not take the leap into the future of money?”
