Kraken is set to dramatically expand its offering by launching tokenized shares of well-known American companies such as Nvidia, Apple, and Tesla, as was recently announced by several news sources. The token, called “xStocks,” is being developed on the Solana network and will allow investors to trade globally 24/7. Among the available exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY), which tracks the performance of the S&P 500 index, and the SPDR Gold Shares (GLD), ideal for those looking to invest in gold.
What makes this offering special is that the tokenized shares are backed by real shares held by Backed Finance. This means that investors can exchange their tokens 1:1 for cash, providing a solid foundation for the value of these digital assets.
In April, Kraken announced its first phase, launching over 11.000 US stocks and ETFs, initially available in ten US states via Kraken Securities. With the latest announcement, customers outside of the US can now take advantage of tokenized versions of over XNUMX popular stocks and ETFs, starting with Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
The development puts Kraken in direct competition with platforms like Robinhood and makes it the first exchange to successfully offer tokenized shares of major US companies. Binance previously attempted to launch tokenized US stocks in 2021, but those plans were ultimately abandoned due to regulatory uncertainty.
A Kraken spokesperson confirmed to news sources that the exchange is “actively working with various regulators” to ensure xStocks can be legally offered in each jurisdiction, given the varying regulations.
Tokenization, the process of converting physical assets into blockchain tokens, is currently one of the most talked about topics in the crypto space. More and more companies, such as Ondo Finance, BlackRock, and Franklin Templeton, are already pioneering this field, bringing the total tokenization market to a whopping $65 billion in May.
“It almost feels like magic to make the future of investing so accessible!” The possibilities are endless and the excitement in the crypto sector is palpable. Who knows what opportunities are around the corner?
