Moonbeam shifts course to base for AI development

Moonbeam Leaves Polkadot for Ethereum Layer 2 Base: An Attempt to Conquer the AI-Driven Crypto Market

Reading time: 2 minutes

Moonbeam, the interoperability protocol based on Polkadot, is undergoing a major course correction. The project is switching to the Ethereum Layer 2 network Base to develop a network for the communication and handling of AI agents, with the goal of capturing a share of the emerging market. “This is a shift to the most exciting frontier in crypto“Autonomous AI agents that find each other, negotiate work, and pay each other fully on-chain, without the intervention of third parties,” Moonbeam said in a statement.

The Moonbeam team believes that AI-driven on-chain coordination represents a significant long-term opportunity. This transition enables them to concentrate resources in this direction. Unfortunately, Moonbeam has not yet presented a timeline for the launch of the Moonbeam Protocol.

The development of agents has seen significant adoption within the crypto industry. Prominent business leaders such as Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, and Jeremy Allaire, CEO of Circlepredict that AI agents will become the primary users of blockchain-based payments within a few years. Coinbase’s x402 payment protocol has contributed to this development, as have the Layer 1 blockchains Aptos and Near, which have deployed infrastructure to support agent-driven on-chain activities.

However, adoption in the blockchain-based payments space is struggling to gain the desired momentum; data from Artemis shows that only $2 million in trading volume has been processed via the x402 protocol in the past 30 days. Development of AI agents is also proceeding slowly within major technology companies. For instance, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, noted on Thursday that the technology has not accelerated the company's workflows as quickly as initially hoped.

Moonbeam's decision is viewed by various members of the crypto community as a significant setback for the Polkadot ecosystem, with a user on X labeling Moonbeam as Polkadot's “flagship project.” “That is really annoying for Polkadot,” said another user. Moonbeam was launched in January 2022 as a parachain on Polkadot and offered developers the ability to build Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible applications directly within the Polkadot ecosystem.

Holders of Moonbeam (GLMR) tokens must migrate their tokens from Moonbeam's Polkadot parachain to Base before July 31, 2026, including GLMR linked to lending markets, staking contracts, and other decentralized finance protocols. Holders holding their tokens on a centralized exchange do not need to take any action, according to Moonbeam. During the transition period, the project will continue to offer its cross-chain interoperability services on the Polkadot parachain and will not abandon its existing developers or infrastructure providers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the pivot to Ethereum Layer 2 Base mean for Moonbeam?
This shift for Moonbeam marks a strategic focus on developing a network for AI agents, which may entail focusing more on on-chain automation and collaboration between autonomous systems.

How is the crypto community reacting to this change?
The reactions are predominantly negative, and many members of the community view Moonbeam's decision as a major setback for the Polkadot ecosystem, which could lead to decreased investment interest in other Polkadot projects.

What are the implications for GLMR holders?
GLMR holders must pay attention to the deadline for the migration to Base. Losing tokens due to a lack of action can have financial consequences, especially for those involved in decentralized financial protocols.
