It's Monday in the crypto world, and that means more news from Bitcoin treasury firm Strategy. Formerly known as MicroStrategy, the firm has announced yet another impressive acquisition. Between May 5 and May 11, the firm acquired a whopping 13.390 BTC added to its balance sheet, bringing its total holdings to over $1,34 billion. This means their total Bitcoin holdings now stand at 568.840 BTC, worth around $59 billion.
Michael Saylor, the founder and chairman of Strategy, has pointed out that total spending on Bitcoin have now risen to $39,41 billion, with an average purchase price of $69.287 per coin. Strategy is now the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, and that’s no small title. The company began buying Bitcoin in 2020 and has been adding to its crypto pot over the years, with a sharp acceleration in purchases last year.
Saylor came up with the idea of buying Bitcoin during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, when the US Federal Reserve was pumping trillions of dollars into the economy to get it going again, he argued that Bitcoin is a superior asset and an excellent hedge against inflation. He also encouraged other businesses to invest in Bitcoin to preserve capital.
Strategy, based in Tysons, Virginia, is now moving into securitizing Bitcoin. This means that investors can buy shares of a company that are traded on the stock exchange, giving them regulated exposure to the cryptocurrency. Interestingly, smaller companies like Metaplanet and Semler Scientific have begun to follow Strategy’s business model.
Bitcoin is currently trading around $104.110, having surged nearly 11% in a seven-day period. However, its price has remained largely flat over the past 24 hours. The cryptocurrency hit an all-time high of $108.786 earlier this year, and it appears to still be trading just 4% below that record.
With this constant investment in Bitcoin and the growing acceptance of cryptocurrency in the business world, it is clear that the digital currency is starting to make its way into the traditional financial world.
