France arrests more than 12 suspects in crypto kidnapping case

France Arrests Over 12 Suspects in Crypto Kidnapping Case

Reading time: 2 minutes

More than 12 people have been arrested in France in connection with two high-profile cryptocurrency-related kidnappings in Paris. The detainees include several minors, and the charges include kidnapping, attempted kidnapping and criminal conspiracy.

French investigators are looking into the possibility that a criminal organization is responsible for these recent kidnappings, possibly using social networks for recruitment.

One of the recent alleged kidnapping attempts occurred on May 13, when three men attempted to kidnap the daughter and grandson of Pierre Noizat, the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of the French crypto exchange Paymium, in Paris. The attempt, captured on video by bystanders, was foiled when Noizat's daughter defended herself and passersby intervened.

In a separate case earlier in May, French authorities rescued the father of a crypto marketing entrepreneur, who had been kidnapped and held for a ransom of between €5 and €7 million. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the alleged failed kidnapping of Noizat’s family, but up to six people linked to the kidnapping of the crypto entrepreneur’s father have been identified and captured, including the alleged kidnappers themselves.

Earlier this year, David Balland, the co-founder of the crypto hardware wallet maker Ledger, was abducted from his home, with the perpetrators reportedly demanding cryptocurrency. Balland was rescued by French police a few days later.

Increased security measures

In response to this series of high-profile attacks, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau earlier this month beefed up security measures for crypto entrepreneurs and their family members in France.

According to a GitHub page created by Jameson Lopp, a cypherpunk and co-founder of the self-managed company Casa, there have been six incidents of criminal activity in France so far involving crypto ransom demands, half of which took place in Paris.

Additionally, industry executives are beefing up their security by hiring professional bodyguards in hopes of deterring malicious actors.

The recent increase in crime rates in the crypto sector highlights the need for more rigorous security strategies. Criminal activity demanding cryptocurrency as ransom is a growing concern for both entrepreneurs and law enforcement agencies. The sector must further strengthen its defenses against these types of threats to ensure investor safety and the integrity of crypto services.
