France intensifies fight against crypto ransomware attacks after rise in incidents in 2026

France Intensifies Fight Against Crypto-Ransom Attacks After Rise in Incidents In 2026

Reading time: 2 minutes

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has announced a more “ambitious” approach to combating crypto-ransom attacks, after confirming that as many as 77 incidents of kidnapping, extortion, or attempted extortion have been reported in the first half of 2026, all related to cryptocurrency. This number has risen significantly compared to the 45 incidents recorded throughout 2025, according to local news source BFM Business.

During a meeting with the Association for the Development of Digital Assets (ADAN), Nuñez acknowledged the growing concern regarding this serious issue and promised more support from the government. France has developed into one of the biggest hotspots for 'wrench attacks' (violent extortion in which criminals use physical coercion to force victims to hand over cryptocurrency); approximately 11% of the French own crypto, which amounts to about 7,3 million people.

Earlier this year, French authorities launched a special prevention platform and a rapid alert and protection system for crypto holders and professionals. This system has attracted 724 registrations to date, according to Nuñez. The emergency measures have resulted in 200 arrests. Recently, an attacker was caught within eight hours, partly thanks to the victim's use of an emergency identification line.

Nuñez has promised to draw up a three-pronged plan to strengthen security measures for the crypto sector. This plan includes improved information exchange, particularly because criminal networks often operate internationally, closer cooperation with ADAN, and better operational coordination between security services.

The security firm CertiK reported in May that the number of wrench attacks worldwide increased by 41% in the first four months of 2026 compared to the same period last year, with most attacks occurring in Europe. France is considered the 'epicenter' of these attacks, due in part to the presence of various prominent companies and their leaders, a culture of ostentatious displays and voluntary disclosures of personal information ('doxxing') deeply rooted in the community, and proven vulnerability resulting from numerous data breaches.

A shocking example is David Balland, co-founder of the French hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger, who was kidnapped along with his partner in January 2025 and demanded a ransom before being freed by the police. Ledger itself experienced one of the most devastating data breaches in the industry in 2020, in which the customer database was hacked and more than 270.000 personal records were leaked, causing a wave of phishing and wrench attacks that continue to this day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the key measures the French government is taking to combat crypto-ransom attacks?
The French government has presented a three-phase plan that includes, among other things, improved information exchange, strong cooperation with the Association for the Development of Digital Assets (ADAN), and better coordination between various security services.

Why are France and Europe so vulnerable to wrench attacks?
France is seen as an epicenter for such attacks due to the strong presence of prominent crypto companies, a culture of openness within the community, and numerous data breaches that offer criminals opportunities to identify victims.

How can crypto investors protect themselves against these threats?
Crypto investors should take proactive steps such as using hardware wallets, participating in security programs, and always being alert to suspicious activity in their environment. It is also advisable to use emergency identification lines and stay in contact with relevant authorities.
