Former Celsius Network CEO Alex Mashinsky Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison

Former Celsius Network CEO Alex Mashinsky Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison

Reading time: 2 minutes

Former Celsius Network CEO Alex Mashinsky was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Thursday for mismanaging customer funds and manipulating the market price of the lender’s CEL token. The widely watched verdict comes after a spate of lawsuits and accusations that have rocked the cryptocurrency world.

Crimes that had consequences for many

Mashinsky, 58, pleaded guilty in December 2024 to two charges: commodities fraud and securities fraud. Initially, the case against him had included seven counts, including two counts of wire fraud. As the trial reached its climax, federal prosecutors were asking for a 20-year sentence, while the defense was asking for a much more lenient sentence of just one year and one day.

Demands of the victims

Several creditors of the bankrupt Celsius had demanded the harshest sanctions for Mashinsky's crimes. The charges against him carried a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. In a letter to Judge Koeltl on May 5, Mashinsky's lawyers argued for a humanitarian approach. They stated that a longer imprisonment would amount to a "death sentence in prison." They argued that the government was unfairly demonizing Mashinsky's views and motivations.

The Fall of Celsius and its Consequences

Celsius went bankrupt in July 2022, weeks after the platform froze customer withdrawals under the guise of “extreme market conditions.” The crypto market suffered a bank run of sorts, triggered by the collapse of algorithmic stablecoins like LUNA and UST, causing thousands of customers to lose over $5 billion in the chaos surrounding the company. Efforts to repay debts to creditors are ongoing to this day.

Was Celsius's downfall the result of bad policies or was Mashinsky simply unable to do better in uncertain times? In the world of crypto it is often not just about money, but also about trust — and that has now been severely damaged.
