Ethereum's base network launches B20 token standard for stablecoins and tokenized assets

Ethereum's Base Network Launches B20 Token Standard for Stablecoins and Tokenized Assets

Reading time: 2 minutes

The Ethereum Layer 2 network Base, backed by Coinbase, is about to activate its B20 token standard on the mainnet. This marks the introduction of a native framework for stablecoins, tokenized real assets (RWAs), and other tradable tokens.

According to Base documentation, the go-live of B20 is scheduled for 18:00 UTC, giving developers the opportunity to create tokens under this new standard.

The activation enables developers to use Base's native token standard to create stablecoins, RWAs, tokenized shares, and other tradable tokens, without having to build and audit custom ERC-20 contracts.

This standard supports two variants: the asset token and the stablecoin. The asset token offers configurable decimals between six and eighteen, while the stablecoin token has a fixed format of six decimals and requires issuers to specify a fiat currency such as the dollar or euro.

B20 was introduced as part of the network's Beryl upgrade, which went live on June 26. This upgrade reduced the waiting time for withdrawals from seven to five days and added technical improvements aimed at optimizing network performance.

Base states that B20 tokens are compatible with standard ERC-20 tokens, but they feature built-in management functions for issuers. These functions include supply limits, transfer rules, minting, burning, pausing, and transaction notes.

The B20 activation follows a series of outages related to the network's sequencer infrastructure.

On June 25, Base experienced an outage due to a consensus issue. At that time, the network reported that an invalid block had been ordered, which prevented the creation of new blocks. Base resumed block production the same day after an interruption of nearly two hours.

In a post-mortem report, Base indicated that a bug in the sequencer was responsible for the consecutive outages on June 25 and 26. The first incident lasted approximately 116 minutes, while the second outage continued for about 20 minutes, caused by a race condition that prevented sequencers from getting back on schedule after a system reset.

The first outage occurred a few hours before the scheduled Beryl upgrade, which was postponed by one day due to a timing issue with the activation registration of B20.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main benefits of the B20 token standard for developers?
The B20 token standard offers developers a standardized method for creating stablecoins and other tokenized assets, which reduces development time and costs. In doing so, they do not need to design and audit complex and expensive custom ERC-20 contracts.

What does the B20 activation mean for the market?
The activation of the B20 standard can accelerate the adoption of stablecoins and tokenized assets in the European market. This offers investors new opportunities and a broader base for liquidity, which is crucial for the growth of the crypto market.

How do the recent periods of outage affect the perception of the Base network structure?
The recent outages have raised questions about the reliability of Base's infrastructure. The network must be able to address these incidents quickly to restore confidence among investors and developers in the increasingly competitive crypto market.
