Ethereum recently saw an impressive 35% increase in value in just one week. But will the upward trend last? The increase in Total Value Locked (TVL) and other blockchain data provide an encouraging picture, although there is also a strikingly contradictory signal.
The Total Value Locked (TVL) is a key indicator that reflects the total value of assets locked within a blockchain ecosystem. This includes tokens used within decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms, as well as those locked in smart contracts or used as collateral for loans.
Recent figures show that Ethereum now accounts for a whopping 53% of total DeFi TVL. This means that more than half of all locked assets within DeFi protocols are using the Ethereum network. This is a clear indication of confidence. A rising TVL indicates that investors are willing to lock up their capital on Ethereum for a longer period of time, instead of keeping it liquid on exchanges. Moreover, it confirms Ethereum’s status as the blockchain of choice, with a high degree of decentralization and security. Despite the rise of competing networks such as Solana, Cardano and Avalanche, Ethereum remains the undisputed market leader in the DeFi sector.
Another positive sign is the decrease in the number of Ethereum tokens on exchanges. The total supply on exchanges has decreased by 1,1% and now stands at 19,25 million ETH. This development suggests that more and more investors are moving their coins to their own wallets. This is generally considered a bullish sign: a decrease in available ETH on exchanges reduces the immediate selling pressure, which increases the chance of further price appreciation.
However, not all news is positive for Ethereum. Despite the impressive price rise, Ethereum Spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have seen significant capital outflows. Between May 6 and 8, millions left these funds for three consecutive days: $17,9 million on Tuesday, $21,8 million on Wednesday, and another $16,1 million on Thursday.
This outflow is striking and in stark contrast to the positive price development. This suggests that some institutional investors may be taking profits or that confidence in the ETF structure has been temporarily eroded.
Why is the increase in Total Value Locked so important for Ethereum?
The increase in Total Value Locked shows that investors have confidence in Ethereum and are willing to lock up their assets for a longer period of time. This points to a healthy ecosystem and strong demand for DeFi applications on the network.
What does it mean that more and more ETH is disappearing from exchanges?
When investors move their ETH to their own wallets, it reduces the available supply on exchanges. This can lead to less selling pressure and even further price increases, as the asset is more protected from immediate sales.
Why is the capital outflow from Ethereum ETFs worrying?
The outflow of capital from Ethereum ETFs could indicate that institutional investors are either locking in their profits or have doubts about the future of these products. This could signal that confidence is temporarily waning, despite Ethereum’s positive price performance.
