England is considering a ban on crypto donations to political parties

England Considers Ban on Crypto Donations to Political Parties

Reading time: 2 minutes

The British government is considering a ban on crypto donations to political parties, a decision that will directly impact Reform UK and its leader, Nigel Farage. This party has advocated for the adoption of digital assets as part of a broader strategy for a crypto revolution in the UK.

This topic is being discussed in the context of a new Elections Act, which is intended to strengthen confidence in politics. This is despite the fact that the ban was not included in an earlier policy document. A government spokesperson indicated that the plans are being reviewed, with more details to be included in the legislation itself.

Reform UK is the first party to accept crypto donations this year. During the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas in May, Farage announced that the party would be contributing in Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies from eligible donors. The party has since launched a platform for receiving crypto donations.

These developments come as Reform UK has gained a clear lead in the polls, with a score of around 29% in the latest national averages. This places the party ahead of both Labour and the Conservatives, while Labour has fallen to around 18% and the Conservatives are at 17%. This points to a fragmented political landscape, with the traditional two-party system under pressure.

Those advocating for action against crypto donations, including former Cabinet Secretary Pat McFadden and Business Committee Chair Liam Byrne, argue that digital assets make it harder to trace the true origin of funds. This increases the risk that foreign money flows, as well as the proceeds of crime, could slip through the cracks.

The debate has been fueled by the conviction last month of Nathan Gill, the former leader of Reform in Wales, who was convicted of receiving payment for expressing pro-Russian views in the European Parliament. Farage has condemned Gill and rejected any connection to him.

In addition to the ban on crypto donations, the Elections Act is also expected to tighten rules for unincorporated companies and require political parties to conduct risk assessments for donations that could pose a threat of foreign interference.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the proposed ban on crypto donations affect Reform UK's strategy?
The ban would impose significant restrictions on Reform UK, which is relying on crypto for its innovative financing model and to attract new donors. This could negatively impact its growth in the polls.

What are the concerns surrounding the traceability of crypto donations?
Critics point out that cryptocurrencies can offer anonymity, making it harder to trace the origin of the funds. This increases the risk of foreign influence and illicit financing in politics.

What are the expected changes to the rules for political donations in the UK?
The new legislation is likely to tighten guidelines for accepting donations, with an emphasis on limiting foreign interference and requiring political parties to conduct a risk assessment of donations received.
