Sean “Diddy” Combs has a meme on his X account coin promoted, which caused a storm of reactions. This official Diddy coin, which is part of the Solana network, shot up to a market value of $181 million shortly after its launch. But as life sometimes goes, its value quickly plummeted by 79,5% to around $37 million, within a few hours.
The incident stole the limelight in the context of Combs’ trial in New York for sex kidnapping and racketeering. He allegedly forced women into sexual encounters, nicknamed “freak-offs.” One legal expert warns that the launch of this token could be seen by the court as a sign of indifference, potentially leading to a harsher sentence if he is found guilty.
It was about an hour after the launch that the official Diddy Meme (DIDDY) appeared on his X account. One buyer invested $349.800 in DIDDY before the tweet went up and sold his shares with a profit of $918.000 spread over more than sixty trades – even before the coin started to crash.
In the meantime, Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, decided to share Combs' post with a heart and the hashtag “#FreeDiddy.” This caused a temporary spike to $81,5 million, before the currency fell back to a meager $32 million.
Ariel Givner, a crypto lawyer, warned that launching a meme coin while under federal indictment is an extremely risky move. “It could be seen as manipulative or self-centered,” she said. Even if the court wouldn’t normally consider the “optics,” prosecutors could certainly use it to demonstrate a lack of remorse.
Givner added that the move could impact Combs’ sentence if he’s found guilty, and potentially even affect his pretrial hearings. She went so far as to say it could potentially tie the music producer to additional financial charges. “From a legal and ethical perspective, it’s grotesque to launch a meme coin amid such serious allegations. It trivializes the seriousness of the charges and turns public outrage into a PR opportunity. I think it’s an insensitive money-grab at best,” she concluded.
Notorious celebrity crypto promoter Sahil Arora says he’s behind the move. He claims rapper Tory Lanez put him in touch with Combs’ son, King Combs. King Combs manages the social media accounts and did the promotion. Arora also claims to have worked with Ye’s manager, John Monopoly, to get storage for the repost.
When asked, neither man would respond for comment. Arora made his name by helping Caitlyn Jenner launch her own token. Shortly after its launch, Jenner complained that the crypto promoter owed her “a lot of money” and stopped responding after several bank transfers.
Since then, Arora has launched meme coins featuring various artists, including R&B singer Jason Derulo and rappers Rich the Kid and Lil Pump. Nearly every time a token launched, it collapsed within hours. When asked if there was more to DIDDY this time, Arora cryptically replied, “None are.”
