The Dutch Investment World: Dominated by Young, Highly Educated Men with Above-Average Incomes

Reading time: 2 minutes

It's clear that investing isn't uniformly distributed among the Dutch population. The difference between men and women is significant. Statistics show that 31% of men invest, while this is only true for 18% of women.

Education and Income as Determining Factors

Education level and income also play a significant role in investment behavior. Among highly educated Dutch people, 38% invest, while this percentage is only 12% among those with lower levels of education. Income groups also show a significant difference: 44% of those with an above-average income invest, compared to only 14% of those with a below-average income.

Age as a Crucial Factor

It's striking that even after adjusting for factors like wealth and income, age still plays a decisive role in investment behavior. Young people aged 18 to 24 are twice as likely to invest as those aged 65 to 80.

Crypto Investors: Risk Takers or Strategists?

Cryptocurrencies have established a solid position in the investment market. A quarter of investors own cryptocurrencies or a related tracker. Despite the stereotype of the reckless gambler who bets their entire fortune, recent research shows that 70% of crypto investors also invest in traditional investments such as shares or holds funds.

The Cautious Crypto Investor

It is rare to find investors who invest exclusively in crypto Investing; this group represents only 7% of the total number of investors. The average crypto investor appears to be a cautious strategist, with a significant amount of savings. On average, their disposable income consists of 47% savings, 28% traditional investments, and 'only' 25% crypto.

Why Not Invest?

For the majority of Dutch people who don't invest, reasons other than financial ones often play a role. Risk is the most frequently cited reason for not investing (54%), followed by a lack of knowledge (45%).
