Coinbase Revives Old Web Payment Code: A New Opportunity for Online Payments

Reading time: 2 minutes

Since the early days of the internet, the HTTP 402 status code, meaning “Payment Required,” has served as a digital relic. Once a symbol of the promise that the internet would provide integrated payment options, that promise never seems to have fully materialized. Three decades later, crypto exchanges Coinbase: through its Developer Platform, this old code has been revived with the launch of x402, an open-source protocol that creates a native payment layer for the web.

The future of payments

"Imagine a future where crypto “The default is to pay for everything,” said Nemil Dalal, lead developer at Coinbase’s Developer Platform, on X. With the launch of the protocol on Tuesday, users can now make payments without registration, emails or complicated signatures. “We designed it to work on any blockchain,” Dalal added.

How it works

x402 uses the HTTP 402 status code to notify clients, both human users and AI agents, that they need to pay. They can then authorize a payment with a stablecoin. Once the server verifies the signature, the transaction is sent to the blockchain, and access to the content or API is granted, depending on the request. Erik Reppel, head of engineering at Coinbase Developer Platform, emphasizes that an “integrated verification step” was added to prevent security holes.

In their whitepaper, the developers claim that x402 “removes the friction of account and billing from payments” and “enables true pay-per-use access without subscriptions or manual billing.” While x402 shows promise, there are concerns that the technology could encounter bottlenecks as it becomes more widely adopted. Dabit points out that users may encounter issues if they encounter an x402 payment request without a compatible crypto wallet or stablecoin balance. This could complicate the developer application flow.

An open standard for agentic finance

Despite the challenges that may come with the new protocol, it addresses a major bottleneck in AI-powered finance and commerce. “Giving agents access to external context and APIs is a high-friction process, fraught with manual configurations that prevent agents from autonomously accessing external services,” Coinbase Developer Platform said in a tweet. With a single line of code, x402 could transform the way AI agents operate on-chain and eliminate outdated payment models.

Coinbase also has plans to further decentralize the x402 roadmap and invites the community to contribute to creating an open standard that will advance agentic finance. We can imagine Joe from Accounting, the least wanted person at parties, now being able to send money with just a line of code—and without all the hassle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is x402?
x402 is an open-source protocol that creates a native payment layer for the web, allowing users to make payments without registration or complicated money transactions.

How does payment verification work at x402?
After authorizing a payment, the server verifies the signature before sending the transaction to the blockchain, ensuring secure access to the requested content or API.

Is x402 suitable for users without a crypto wallet?
Yes, but users without a compatible crypto wallet or sufficient stablecoin may experience issues making payments, requiring additional attention from developers.
